Joe Johnson is from Brooklyn, New York and like the law states, everyone from New York must eventually move to South Florida. So in 1962, Joe and his family came here with just the lint in their pockets, the shirts on their backs and a nifty set of headphones.
Joe's first encounter with radio happened in the mid 60's, when working with his dad for the summer, they used to call upon top 40 radio station WFUN, who's studios were located on Sunset Drive in South Miami. Joe was captivated watching the radio deejay through the window and tried to give him food, instead, Joe thought he’d like to be that deejay and earn free food and t-shirts for himself.
At about 10 years of age, Joe started his radio training. He would use his tape recorder to play deejay and mock up news stories and talk-up record intros. Today he does that for a living on Majic 102.7 here in South Florida. Coincidentally, Majic's owner, Lincoln Financial Media, also owns 790 The Ticket, the same frequency on the AM dial that Joe used to pick through the garbage bins from as a kid.
Joe came to Majic 102.7 in 1987 after co-hosting a morning show across town for 8 years. Once at Majic, he hosted the 6-10 pm slot for 4 years and the award winning “Jukebox Saturday Night” request show for 14 years.
In addition to his love for radio, Joe spent 10 years as a stand up comic, working The Comic Strip, Uncle Funny's and The Improv comedy clubs and wrote some monologue material for Jay Leno's appearances on the Tonight Show back in the 80's.
Today Joe along with Donna Davis is the host of Majic in the Morning! He is also the host, writer and producer of the nationally syndicated Beatle Brunch radio show, which airs on Majic and 100 other radio stations around the country.
JJ lives in Plantation with his wife, Mariah, a theater professor at BCC, actress and voice-over artist, their daughter Brittany, and Cashew and Fosse the family felines. In his spare time (is there any?), Joe eats healthy, does sit-ups and the treadmill every morning and has a Pro Tools digital recording studio in his house so he can work even more. When he has a free weekend, he and the family love to go up to their condo on Hutchinson Island in Stuart to watch the sunrise greet another day.
Awe!
